APL Systems Provides Noise Expertise for Sustainable Mining Project

The HIME project researches how mining and associated early refining processes release particle matter (PM) into air, which may have adverse effects on the health and well-being of workers and of population living nearby. Associated noise may enhance the adverse impacts of PM. Noise is measured with a modern wireless sensor network, provided by APL Systems, that enables the measurement of, not only noise intensity, but also its frequency spectrum and the storage of data for subsequent computer analysis.
The health risks of workers and of real or potential nearby population associated with mining PM and noise is assessed and the main processes causing risks are identified. In order to reduce risks, suggestions are made on the management methods of PM and noise emissions.
The project is funded by TEKES - the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation and is part of the Green Mining Program.
